Battery care for e-scooters and e-choppers – How to keep your lithium-ion battery reliable and strong
The battery is the heart of your e-scooter or e-chopper – and significantly determines its range, performance, and lifespan. Therefore, it's important not only to choose a high-quality battery (e.g., with Samsung, LG, or Panasonic cells, like those we use at Star-Biker), but also to maintain it properly.
With a few simple tips, you can ensure that your battery works reliably even after many charging cycles – in everyday life, in the garage and throughout the year.
Why proper battery care is so important
A lithium-ion battery is technically very sophisticated—but also sensitive to improper handling. Those who treat their batteries well will benefit from:
- More range on every journey
- Longer service life – up to 3,000 charging cycles
- Better temperature resistance
- Less power loss in cold or hot conditions
- Lower maintenance costs
Battery care in summer – protection from heat (if you want to get even more out of it)
Thanks to our high-quality Samsung and LG brand batteries, you'll be perfectly equipped even on hot days. These cells are particularly temperature-stable and can withstand significantly more than many cheaper alternatives.
Nevertheless, it is worth supporting the lifespan and range with a few simple tips – especially in midsummer:
- Avoid direct sunlight, e.g., on asphalt, in the car or shop window
- If possible, charge the battery in the shade or in a cool environment
- Let the battery cool down for about 30 minutes after the ride before charging it
- Do not charge in extreme heat
- Take the battery with you if your vehicle is left outside for a long time
Good to know: Our batteries are designed for high loads – but if you handle them carefully, you'll get even more performance out of them in the long run.
Battery care in winter – maintain range & protect battery (optional, but useful)
Our branded cells from Samsung, LG, and Panasonic demonstrate their strength even in cold temperatures. They are winter-tested and retain their capacity better than many no-name batteries.
For even greater efficiency and optimal use in winter, we recommend:
- Do not charge in frost – ideal from 10 °C ambient temperature
- Bring the battery to room temperature before connecting it to the charger
- After the ride, wait briefly until the battery is no longer ice cold
- No storage in unheated cellars or garages
- For longer periods of inactivity: Remove the battery and store it at 40–60% charge level
- Ideal storage temperature: 10–20 °C, dry, frost-free
Star Biker Tip: If your battery is removable, simply bring it inside on frosty nights – this will further protect the cells.
Charging the battery correctly – what you should keep in mind
Our high-quality Samsung, LG, and Panasonic batteries are robust, durable, and perfectly equipped for everyday use. However, with a few simple charging habits, you can further optimize the lifespan and range of your battery—especially with frequent use.
The following tips are recommended:
- If possible, charge in the range between 20–80%, especially for daily use
- Avoid deep discharge below 5% to prevent cell damage
- Do not leave the charger permanently (e.g. overnight), this relieves the electronics
- Always use the charger on firm, flat surfaces – no carpets, no soft surfaces
- Only use the original charger to ensure that the voltage and current are exactly matched to the battery
Our batteries are designed to operate safely even under less than ideal conditions – but those who charge them carefully will benefit from stable range and even more charging cycles in the long term.
Maintenance & inspection – better early than late
Our lithium-ion batteries are designed for long-term use. However, we recommend having our service team check the battery regularly—for example, once a year or before the start of the season. This way, you can ensure that your vehicle is always reliable and safe on the road.
- Every 6–12 months visual inspection (housing, charging socket, cable connections)
- Odor, heat development or loss of performance → contact customer service immediately
- No self-repair – batteries are live, untrained interventions can be dangerous and void the warranty
Advantages at Star-Biker – more than just batteries
With us, you don't get a standard battery – but a tested brand system with intelligent safety architecture, tailored to our vehicles:
- Certified lithium-ion cells from Samsung, LG or Panasonic
- Safe BMS (Battery Management System) – actively protects against overheating, overvoltage and deep discharge
- High cycle stability – for maximum service life and stable range
- Perfectly matched to our models – whether 45 km/h (with a car driving license B or scooter AM) or up to 125 km/h (with a driving license A, A1, A2 or B196)
Our batteries are designed for the climatic conditions of Switzerland and Germany – they remain stable, safe, and reliable. And with proper care, you'll always be ready to go – in everyday life, summer and winter.
