How we calculate

Transparent calculation

1

Fuel costs

km × consumption × fuel price per year — based on your daily commute.

2

Electricity costs

km × kWh consumption × electricity price. 2–3 kWh/100km is realistic.

3

Fixed costs

Insurance, tax, and maintenance — usually significantly lower for an e-chopper.

4

Break-even

Purchase price ÷ monthly savings = months until the purchase pays off.

Is an e-chopper worth it with current fuel prices?

With petrol prices over €2.10/liter (daily average April 2026) and diesel prices even higher, driving a car in Germany is becoming a real burden. Those who commute 30 km daily with an average car quickly pay well over €2,000 per year just for fuel — without insurance, tax, and workshop costs.

How much does an e-chopper cost to operate?

A Star-Biker e-chopper consumes an average of 2 kWh per 100 km. At an electricity price of €0.30/kWh, that's only €0.60 per 100 km — compared to around €16 for a car. A saving of over 95% in energy costs.

When does the purchase pay off?

For a commuter driving 30 km daily and owning a €2,999 e-chopper, the amortization typically ranges from 10 to 14 months. Those who drive more or choose a cheaper entry-level model starting from €2,299 will be in the black even faster.

What fixed costs are eliminated?

E-choppers up to 45 km/h are exempt from vehicle tax in Germany. Instead of an official license plate, an insurance plate for approx. €50–80 per year is sufficient. For 25 km/h models, the TÜV inspection is also not required.

What driver's license is required?

25 km/h: Moped license from 15 years. 45 km/h: Class AM or car license Class B. 85 km/h: Class A1. If you already have a car license, you can drive most e-choppers immediately.

What about range and everyday usability?

Star-Biker e-choppers offer ranges of 60–120 km per battery charge. This is completely sufficient for the typical commuter. Charging is done overnight at any household socket — without gas stations, without fuel cost stress.

Frequently Asked Questions About the Calculator

All default values are based on German average prices in April 2026: Petrol €2.10/L (according to Federal Statistical Office), electricity €0.30/kWh (household tariff), car consumption 7.5 L/100km (mid-range), insurance €900, maintenance & repairs €1,200. You can adjust all values to your situation.

The calculator only considers running costs, not depreciation. So you actually save more — the depreciation of a car is often €1,000–€2,000 in the first year. For an e-chopper, the depreciation is significantly lower.

Modern lithium batteries typically last 800–1,500 charging cycles. With normal use, this corresponds to 5–8 years. Replacement batteries are available from approx. €350 and can be easily replaced by yourself.

Yes — Star-Biker offers installment payments via Klarna and PayPal. Drivable from just €48 per month. Check out the financing calculator for your desired rate.

A dry shelter or a garage is recommended, but not mandatory. With a weather-resistant cover, you can also park the e-chopper outdoors. The battery is usually removable and can be charged at home.

For 25 and 45 km/h models, you only need an insurance plate — which costs €50–80 per year depending on the provider. For 85 km/h models, motor vehicle liability insurance is required, approx. €80–150 per year. Comprehensive insurance is optional.

Technically yes, but the range decreases by 10–25% in cold weather. For year-round riders, we recommend a cabin scooter with weather protection. The calculation in the calculator assumes year-round use — if you only ride seasonally, halve the days per week accordingly.
