How Your Lithium-Ion Battery Works

Technically sophisticated, but sensitive to improper handling. Understanding the basics will help you achieve more range and a longer lifespan.

Lithium-Ion Cells

During discharge, lithium ions travel from the anode to the cathode, generating electricity. During charging, the process reverses. Samsung SDI and LG cells offer particularly pure electrodes for maximum lifespan.

BMS (Battery Management System)

The BMS monitors every single cell: protection against overcharging, deep discharge, and short circuits. It balances the cells among themselves and automatically stops the charging process at 100%.

Charge Cycles

One charge cycle = 100% discharged and recharged. Using 50% and recharging counts as half a cycle. Depending on the model, your battery will last 800–2600+ cycles before capacity noticeably decreases.

Aging

Batteries lose capacity over time – this is normal. After the full charge cycles, the battery does not "die" but slowly loses range. Proper care significantly slows down this process.

Range

What influences your range?

The specified maximum ranges are based on 25 km/h under optimal conditions. In everyday use, these factors influence how far you can go.

Speed

45 km/h uses significantly more than 25 km/h

Rider Weight

More weight = more energy consumption

Temperature

Cold reduces range by 10–20%

Gradient

Uphill consumes up to 3× more energy

Care

The 6 Golden Rules of Battery Care

With these simple habits, you'll get the most out of your battery – for more range, longer lifespan, and fewer worries.

1

Do not discharge below 20%

Deep discharge is the battery's worst enemy. Recharge regularly, ideally before the battery drops below 20%. The BMS protects against deep discharge, but frequent deep discharge shortens the lifespan.

2

Charge at room temperature

Ideal charging temperature: 15–25 °C. Not in direct sunlight, not in freezing conditions. If cold (below 5 °C), bring the battery indoors and let it warm up before connecting it to the charger.

3

Only use the original charger

Third-party chargers can provide incorrect voltage or charging curves and damage the battery. Only use the included 60V or 72V charger (5A standard or 10A fast charger).

4

Winter storage at 50–60%

If you're not using your vehicle in winter: charge the battery to 50–60% and store it dry at 10–20 °C. Recharge briefly every 4 weeks. Never leave it fully charged or completely empty for weeks.

5

Avoid moisture

Only charge the battery in a dry environment. Regularly check connectors and the charging socket for corrosion. Use contact spray if necessary. No high-pressure cleaner near the battery compartment.

6

Ride regularly

A battery that sits unused for months ages faster than one that is regularly charged and discharged. Short, regular rides are better than long periods of inactivity.

Safety notice: Do not attempt DIY repairs on the battery

Lithium-ion batteries are under high voltage. Never open the battery yourself. In case of odor, heat generation, or performance drop: stop using the battery immediately and contact our customer service. Improper interventions jeopardize your safety and warranty.

Questions & Answers

Frequently Asked Questions about the Battery

Depending on the model and care: 800–2600+ full charge cycles. With average use, this corresponds to a mileage of 25,000 to over 200,000 km. After the full cycles, the battery slowly loses capacity – it continues to function, but the range gradually decreases.

Yes – the BMS automatically switches off the charging process when the battery is full. Charge at room temperature on a non-combustible surface and only use the supplied charger.

Yes – all Star-Biker batteries are removable and equipped with a carrying handle. You can easily remove the battery and charge it at any standard power outlet. Ideal for rental apartments without a garage.

Cold slows down the chemical reaction in the cells – typically 10–20% less range at temperatures below 5 °C. This is not a defect, but normal behavior for all lithium-ion batteries. Full capacity returns as soon as it gets warmer.

When the range significantly decreases (typically: below 70% of original capacity) or the BMS displays error messages. Replacement batteries are available in our shop – as plug & play suitable for your model. Our team will advise you on selection.

That depends on the model. For the Chopper 6.0s, 30Ah, 45Ah, and 57Ah are available – but only if your battery compartment is designed for the respective size. An upgrade from 30Ah to 57Ah is not possible, as the housing dimensions are different. Contact us for individual advice.

No – always charge your battery in a dry environment. The charging socket and connectors are not designed for wet conditions. If you have driven in the rain, dry the charging socket before connecting the charger.

Charge to 50–60%, store dry and frost-free at 10–20 °C. Recharge briefly every 4 weeks to keep the cells active. Never leave it fully charged or completely empty for several weeks.

Lithium-Ion Batteries at Star-Biker – Technology and Care

The battery is the heart of every e-chopper and e-scooter. At Star-Biker, we rely on lithium-ion technology from Samsung SDI, LG Energy Solution, and Panasonic – cells manufactured in the most advanced factories in South Korea and Japan. Our batteries are designed for the climatic requirements in Central Europe – from cold winter days to hot summers.

Samsung SDI and LG Energy Solution

Our batteries use genuine branded cells – no imitations or rebrandings. Samsung SDI cells (e.g., in the M1PS Knight and Bobber M8S) offer over 2600 charge cycles. LG Energy Solution cells (e.g., in the Chopper 6.0s) are characterized by particularly stable voltage curves and low self-discharge. Unlike many cheap providers, we do not use no-name cells.

BMS: Your Shield

Every Star-Biker battery features an intelligent Battery Management System (BMS). It monitors the voltage, temperature, and charge status of each cell, protects against overcharging, deep discharge, and short circuits, and balances the cells among themselves.

Battery Care: The Basics

Lithium-ion batteries are maintenance-free, but benefit significantly from proper care. The most important rules: Do not discharge below 20%, charge at room temperature (15–25 °C), only use the original charger, and store in winter at 50–60% charge and 10–20 °C.

Winter: Range and Storage

Especially in cold winters, proper battery storage is crucial. At temperatures below 5 °C, the range decreases by 10–20% – this is not a defect, but normal behavior for all Li-Ion batteries. If you use your vehicle seasonally, store the battery at 50–60% charge, dry and frost-free. Our Samsung SDI and LG cells are particularly temperature stable and can withstand much more than cheap alternatives.

Replacement Batteries Available

For all Star-Biker models, original replacement batteries are available as plug & play – custom-fit for the respective battery compartment. Our team will advise you on selection and check compatibility with your model.
